Background
GHS is social business enterprise established in 2006 under Bangladesh Company Act. 1994, initiated and inaugurated by Nobel Laureate Professor Muhammad Yunus. He is the chairman of our board of directors.
GHS is a member of Grameen family and operating successfully by adapting the concept of Social Business and cross subsidy model.
Four companies of Grameen Family Grameen Telecom Trust, Grameen Kallyan, Grameen Shakti and Grameen Telecom are the Stakeholders of GHS.
Eye Hospitals
At present, GHS has four eye hospitals located at Bogura (2007), Barishal (2009), Thakurgaon (2013) and Sathkhira (2020) districts. Currently, we have 27 physicians, 159 nurses and paramedics, 101 admin and support staff. In total, 291 employees are serving in four eye hospitals. Altogether, GHS hospitals have 225 beds including wards and cabins.
So far GHS hospitals treated 1.8 million patients, performed more than 75 thousand cataract surgeries and 20 thousand other eye surgeries. we provided free treatment to 4,8000 patients and performed 8,000 free surgeries. We also performed more than 8,500 surgeries at a subsidized rate. We have an eye support surgery fund to cover the free and subsidized surgeries.
GHS established its first eye hospital in 2007 at Bogura, a northern district of Bangladesh about 220 km from the capital city Dhaka. In 2009, GHS established second eye hospital at Rupatali in Barishal District about 260 km south from Dhaka. Both the hospitals are named Grameen GC (Green Children) Eye Hospital as Green Children Foundation, USA has contributed half million US Dollar for each of the hospitals. The third hospital of GHS established in March, 2013 at Thakurgaon, about 419 km from Dhaka, named Grameen Eye Hospital, Thakurgaon. The fourth GHS eye hospital established in October 2020, in Satkhira. It’s about 261 km from Dhaka, named Grameen Eye Hospital, Satkhira. The catchment area of the hospital is Satkhira district.
